Are Podcasts Going to Become Movies or TV Shows?

If you are like us, you love a great true crime podcast. Some of the most popular true crime podcasts over the years have included Serial, Your Own Backyard, Counterclock and Tom Brown’s Body. While many would think these podcasts would be best in the form of a TV show or documentary, these work well as movies too. Check out Zodiac and Catch Me If You Can if you haven’t seen them yet.

Years ago many wondered if podcasts would survive as they were basically hidden on iPhones. Even to this day, Apple does absolutely nothing to promote podcasts. Spotify is trying to monetize the niche but it still has a long way to go. One way in which podcasters can monetize their content is to sell the rights to their stories. These true crime podcasts are fascinating and would reach an audience ten times the size if they became a streaming movie or documentary on Netflix or Amazon Prime. It is safe to say Disney+ is never going to go down this road.

Expect to see some of the better true crime podcasts on a streaming screen near you late in 2020 or early in 2021. With Serial being the most popular, it would be our pick to get the first movie or TV deal. That said, there are dozens of others that may sell their content rights at a much lower cost. Check out Counterclock seasons 1 and 2 to get a grasp of just how good podcast content has become in the last several years.
